The Balcon de Europa was absolutely packed on New Year’s Eve, a solid, heaving mass of humanity stretching back as far as the side entrance of the church. The bells chimed and the firework display began. Two minutes later it was all over, certainly not the most impressive display in living memory and without the traditional big ‘finale’. So much so that it was a full five minutes before the band struck up as they, along with everyone else, seemed to be expecting more.
