On Monday August 14th it is the tenth annual Fiesta Blanca, this year taking place on El Chucho beach, Nerja, from 21:00 to 03:00.

The basic idea is to dress all in white and have a good time on the beach, with music and drink to help things along. It was originally added to the festive calendar merely because there was not much else happening fiesta-wise during the month of August. A good a reason as any.

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Biblioplayas (summer beach libraries), there will be a sand castle/sand sculpture competition on August 18th, starting at 17:00 and open to kids aged between 4 and 14 years. There will be two categories, ages 4 to 8 and ages 9 to 14. The competition takes place on El Salon beach.

To enter the competition, simply register at one of the Biblioplayas (Burriana, Torrecilla, El Salon). Registration is from August 7th onwards.

The Council announced plans to add shade to calle Diputación, calle Málaga (the top end) and calle El Barrio, similar to that already installed at the bottom end of calle Cristo and calle Pintada in the centre of town. The local authority has a grant to carry out this task, one of only two municipalities to have actually bothered to apply for the grant.

I assume the work will be carried out this year although there is as yet no sign of anything actually happening. It will also be interesting to see how the Council fares with the lunatic woman from calle Málaga 1 who tries to push workmen from their ladders, hurls stones and abuse and cuts cables (such as telephone) if anyone dares to touch the facade of her property.

As the telephone company connection box is on her wall, this has made it almost impossible for anyone in the top part of the street to become ‘connected’.

Saturday August 12th is International Youth Day and the will be events – music, dance etc – from 21:00 to 00:00 on the Balcón de Europa, Plaza de España and on the Paseo Balcón de Europa.
