Wildlife in the Slow Lane
Serin are small, shy finches who tend to be well camouflaged with their surroundings and it is amazing just how many will fly up from a small shrub if you happen to get too close…too close being about twenty metres or more!
I would say 25 to 30 flew up from one small shrub as I got nearby. I was totally oblivious to their presence even though I was looking in the undergrowth. Never ceases to be a surprise when they suddenly fly up.
Serin eat seeds, buds and small invertebrates, usually at or very near ground level.
Very colourful birds.
