Wildlife in the Slow Lane
Try as I might I could not get this critter to poke his tongue out – the tongue is seemingly a great help in identifying bees – so had to settle for trying to match the photo with my book on insects.
As far as I can tell, and I could be (probably am) totally wrong, it looks like Colletes succinctus. There is a school of thought placing all these hymneopterans in one big ’bee family’, Apidae, an approach I wholeheartedly support.
