Wildlife in the Slow Lane
The European Fan Palm or Mediterranean dwarf Palm, Chamaerops humilis, is a genus of flowering plants in the palm family Arecaceaethe and is the only palm tree native to continental Europe.
It is mainly found in southwestern Europe (Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Malta) and is the northernmost naturally occurring palm in the world
It is a hardy palm, capable of withstanding temperatures as low as -12 degrees (fortunately an exceedingly rare occurrence) and is quite happy in poor or rocky soil.
The Fan Palm has multiple stems growing from a single base and can grow as high as 5 metres, although most specimens one sees, at the sides of roads or in parks, tend to be much smaller. Growth is very slow.
It is a popular ornamental plant throughout the world.
