Restaurant Avalon, attached to the Hotel Avalon, is located on a small hilltop at the entrance to Urbanisation Punta Lara in Nerja and affords magnificent views of the hills and the coastline.
From the exterior dining area you have a wonderful view over El Playazo beach, the longest beach in Nerja and as yet still unspoilt. That is going to change with the construction of hotels, promenades and other sundry items but, fortunately, work has not yet started on this project. What a surprise!
Anyway, the outside dining area is very pleasant and, as I had not eaten here before, I was curious. The restaurant gets a lot of rave reviews, so I was quietly optimistic.
We had three courses which were also punctuated by additional bits and bobs, such as sorbets, olives, warm bread with a choice of sundry toppings…Quite a feast.
As a starter I chose chicken liver paté, for the main a lamb shank with puréed potatoes, veggies and red pepper stuffed with goat’s cheese, and to finish, a chocolate mousse.
The starter and dessert were served on thin slate squares, the main course on a regular plate. There are those who decry the trend to serve food in hats, shoes, on blocks of wood etc rather than on traditional plates but on this occasion it was okay I think.
The food was absolutely excellent, well cooked and beautifully presented. The service was very good, the location very good and the general ambience was very pleasant. Definitely a restaurant to be considered for a special occasion (along with Restaurant 34, Oliva and Pata Negra)
